Artistique - Skate America - 1re journée: Nobunari Oda frappe fort d'entrée

Le Japonais Nobunari Oda a pris une belle avance, de huit points, après le programme court du Skate America, épreuve d'ouverture du Grand Prix ISU de patinage artistique, lors de la première journée jeudi à Hartford (Connecticut).

Dans une tenue noire scintillante, Oda (19 ans), 4e des Mondiaux-2006, a réussi un programme court suffisamment solide pour obtenir 81,80 points et devancer le Français Alban Préaubert (73.80) et l'Américain Evan Lysacek (70.35), le médaillé de bronze des derniers Mondiaux.

Comme Oda, Préaubert a dû battre son record personnel pour faire mieux que Lysacek, troisième l'an passé et poussé par son public.

A relative unknown in the skating world, his charm is undeniable, and his popularity may explode after tonight's performance. After landing seven triples, and with the crowd in the palm of his hand, Preaubert might have gotten just a little too excited as he flopped on a final triple Salchow.

“The program is not totally ready yet, but it was not bad,” he said. “People like, I think. There was a lot of noise [from the crowd]. For me, it's good to just make a mistake at the end of the program, because I was tired since it's the beginning of the season. It's promising.”

Comment ne pas aimer son style? Ca se fait de plus en plus rare un patineur qui réveille vraiment et qui ose, dans son choix musical! Encore une fois, bravo Alban!

Preaubert put out a strong performance as well. He landed a triple Axel, a triple flip-triple toeloop combination and a triple Lutz in his entertaining interpretation of “Night on a Bald Mountain” and “Buzzy Bee”. The Frenchman also was awarded a level four for all three spins and a level three for both footwork sequences. He received 73.80 points (41.40/32.40), which is also a new personal best for him. “The program today went really well, the jumps, the spins, the steps. I had a good contact with the crowd and I hope to confirm this performance tomorrow”, Preaubert said. “I had a very good summer training in Courchevel with (coach) Annick (Dumont), and I am well prepared. I think this was a good beginning for the season for me. For a year now, I have a new personal best in each competition, and that’s a good sign! It gives me confidence and I hope to have 75 (points) at the Trophee Bompard (his second Grand Prix event).”

Next up was Preaubert, who stood in second place after the Short Program. He turned in an entertaining routine set to music from “The Mask”, “Mike Hammer” and “Swing Kids”, hitting a triple flip-triple toeloop combination, a triple Axel-double toe-double loop and four more triple jumps. The Frenchman fell on the triple Salchow, but he got high levels for his spins and footwork to earn 138.87 points (70.27/69.60), which is another new personal best for him. Preaubert added up a total score of 212.67 points to take the bronze, his first medal in a Grand Prix event.
